The Oman Railway Company (ORC) has received expressions of interest from 109 national and international companies with regard the design, build and technological aspects of the planned railway network.
The shortlist of the tender applicants who have pre qualified will be announced in July with the final tender being put out in August.
Sultanate officials are assessing the quality of the quotes with the support of outside expertise, looking at bidders’ track record in the sections of the design, build and implementation process they have bid for.
The prequalification process is confined to the first sections of the network, linking Al Buraimi, Sohar, and the ports of Salalah and Duqm with the UAE border. However the prequalification will be valid for four years from the date of announcement.
Though being built as part of the GCC Rail Network, it is widely accepted that the planned operation of the network as a whole will not meet the planned opening date in 2017. Several countries are behind schedule, with those on track for completion not building links to the borders, rather focusing on their internal networks.
