Oman's national railway is likely to be powered by diesel engines, instead of an electric traction as proposed earlier, a report said.
The railway lines could be later converted into electric lines, added the report in the Times of Oman.
The Oman Rail Company (ORC), which manager the 2,244-km long national railway project, is likely to name pre-qualified companies for design building the railway track and the by mid-July, the report quoted sources in contracting firms.
The ORC has received 34 quotations from 95 local and international companies for the pre-qualification process for developing the infrastructure, while 14 local and international companies submitted nine quotations for pre-qualifying themselves for technology systems for the railway project, the report said.
The railway systems contractor will serve as a sub-contractor of the main contractor, who conduct the integration and testing and commission the network.
After the pre-qualification process, the ORC will float an EPC contract seeking bids from eligible companies for these two key contracts.
The construction work on Oman national railway project is expected to be awarded by January 2015, according to the report.
